The Workstation Cable Problem
Anyone who spends long hours at a desk knows the irritation of crawling under furniture to plug in a phone charger, or watching a heavy power extension strip dangle off the edge of a desk.
We wanted a clean, professional electrical setup: an international universal socket and a dual high-speed USB charger mounted right at table height on a custom wooden desk.
Why Off-the-Shelf Hardware Store Boxes Failed
We picked a GM Modular 2-module faceplate with built-in USB fast charging. But when we looked in electrical markets for a surface-mount box, standard options had clear limitations:
- Bulky 4-inch deep industrial PVC boxes meant for concrete walls.
- No neat screw flanges to mount directly and securely onto furniture or wood panels.
- Limited ventilation for heat generated by internal fast-charging transformer modules.
Engineered specifically for GM Modular faceplates: precision snap-fit border with dual screw ears.
The Custom 3D Printed Solution
Our workshop designed a slim, minimalist enclosure with:
- Dual Reinforced Mounting Flanges: Countersunk screw holes to anchor rigidly to wood without wiggling when pulling plugs.
- Side Heat Dissipation Lattice: Geometric airflow vents that let fast-charger circuitry run cool under continuous laptop load.
- Rear Pass-Through Channel: Concealed power routing for zero visible wire clutter.
- Expandable Modular Design: Can click side-by-side with an auxiliary 1-module switch box for master control!
Installation: 2 wood screws driven straight through the mounting ears. Rock solid, zero wobble.
The Result: Clean Workstation Power
Printed in Tough PLA in Matte White to match the GM Modular faceplate, the box screwed into the desk cleanly. The faceplate clicked into place with a crisp snap.
No dangling cables, no crawling under desks, and no bulky industrial eyesores. Just clean, immediate power at arm's reach.
